Angel Tree

The purpose of the Angel Tree project was to fill the Christmas wants of children in the community who otherwise would not have anything at all.  We began the project during the first week of December.  We committed to 50 angels from DHS in Jay.  These angels were hung on a tree in the break room at the school and left for people to volunteer to take.  But what started out to be 50 angels, soon turned into 66.    By Dec. 15, our due date, we had a majority brought back but still had a few left.  So Ms. Phelps and Angel Tree Committee Chair Stephanie Whitmire volunteered to go and buy presents with the money businesses and NETC PBL had donated to us.  It must have been a great experience for these kids to have actually gotten gifts when times weren't looking too good.  We consider the Angel Tree a great success for the community as well as us.

DHS Christmas Party

On Thursday, December 21, 2000, the chapter held a party for some local children through DHS.  About 25 kids showed up for the party, which took  place in Jay, Oklahoma at the Student Union Center on the Jay School grounds.  During the two-hour party, members participated in playing many games, which included: Red Light/Green Light, Twister, and balloon popping.  Pizza and drinks were served, and Santa Clause came to talk with the children and pass out gifts.  Many of the children talked about the party for days afterwards.  The chapter had such a good reaction to the party; another is being considered.

Stop the Violence

On November 6, we hosted an anti-violence workshop.  Many experts from our community volunteered to speak and the public was invited to attend.  The workshop lasted the entire day allowing our speakers to tell about what they do and how they can help us prevent violence; afterwards the student body was encouraged to ask questions of the speakers.  In addition to the workshop, our chapter joined an anti-violence chain.  Consisting of signatures of those who wish to Stop the Violence.
